FidoNet is a PC-based network run by hobbyists.
It consists of approximately 2,000 PC-based
computer systems world-wide, operated by some 1,000 system operators, which
comprise a network that exchanges mail and files via IP
and modems
using proprietary protocols.
Certain systems can be reached as well via FTP,
TELNET or e-mail
attached files. Individual echomail areas may be gated and accessible
via Usenet News.
Accessing Fidonet via BBS is gaining in
prominence.
Some of these systems are also connected, for the purpose of
exchanging email to the Internet, through a series of
gateway systems
which interact with the Internet via
UUCP
with cooperating *NIX-based
smart-hosts and act as their MX-receivers.
